Teaching Children Good Dental Habits

Habits start in the early age. This is the reason that you will want your kids to have good habits. Among many other habits which you want instilled in your children, the ones which help in maintaining good dental health are pretty much important.

An effective way is to practice good oral hygiene practice in front of them. Having that said, the habits which you want your children to adopt are worth mentioning here.

Practice and explain daily dental hygiene and care

Induction of Good dental habits in children starts when they do not have their first tooth yet. At this point, you will have to make sure that you are cleaning their gums using a wet cloth. As soon as the first tooth erupts, you will need to switch to the brush which you will have to wear on your finger. You can also use a baby toothbrush. You will need to use toothpaste in an amount of smear in this regard. As the number of teeth grows in the mouth, you will need to increase the amount of toothpaste. At this stage, you will need to teach your kids about brushing and flossing by being a role model.

Visiting the dentist

We all know how important dental visits are for everyone. While you visit the dentist to keep your oral health in good state, you also need to make sure that you are taking your kids to the dental visits as well. The right age at which children should be taken to dentist is 1 year after the birth. Children start to gain some consciousness by the age of one. So, they pick this activity as something which needs to be done on regular basis. This is the foundation you can build in order to give your children the habit of visiting the dentist.

Your child should not get oral bacteria

At young age, you mouth of your child should naturally be free of bad oral bacteria. I am saying this due to elaborate the fact that children do not start getting oral bacteria developed at young age. However, they can still get bacteria from others. Make sure that you or anyone else is not causing a transfer of bacteria to your children’s oral cavities.

Help your teenagers to avoid bad dental habits

When children enter teenage, they tend to be attracted towards a lot of foods and oral habits which may not be quite healthy. Junk foods, coffee, soda and alcoholic drinks can be quite disastrous for oral health. Therefore, it is your job as a parent to make sure that your children remain safe from these bad habits.
